How to invest successfully in great companies of the future

Investing in the future’s great companies requires more than just financial acumen; it demands a deeper understanding of the evolving business landscape. I recently read a book called Firms of Endearment which resonated with me. As a firm, we already use our own 21-point checklist for 21st-century companies when researching businesses. The checklist already includes the main aspects expounded by the book but it gave me an enhanced view of how to improve our research even more.

Today’s top companies are those driven by passion and purpose, transcending mere financial goals. They stand out by benefiting all stakeholders – customers, employees, partners, communities, and society at large. Their success isn’t measured just in profits, but in the positive impact they have on the world.

John Mackey, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Whole Foods Market praised “Firms Of Endearment” for highlighting a crucial shift in business dynamics. Firms that have earned the world’s trust act in powerful, positive ways that stakeholders recognise, value, admire and even love. Their actions make the world better, and the world responds.

This extensively updated book will assist you in learning these new rules, building a great firm of endearment, changing the world, and succeeding at every level you desire.

The following are the rules that have been created by the Firms of Endearment:

  • Create a high-performance business based on love (It can be done)
  • Providing people with the self-actualisation they so desperately desire
  • Join capitalism’s radical social transformation, or else you will fall by the wayside.
  • Don’t just talk about creating a happy, productive workplace: Just do it
  • Honor the unspoken emotional contract you share with your stakeholders
  • Establish partner relationships that really are mutually beneficial
  • Build a company that communities welcome enthusiastically
  • Help all your stakeholders win, including your investors

There is tremendous potential for business to make the world a better place. Most of this good is currently done ‘unconsciously’ by creating products and services that people find valuable, providing jobs, and making profits. However, it is also possible for businesses to be done much more consciously, with a higher purpose and optimal value creation for all major stakeholders, as well as creating cultures that maximise human flourishing… The authors’ landmark work, Firms of Endearment, sets the standard by which all businesses should strive to follow and ultimately transcend. I am grateful to them for their groundbreaking work.

Interestingly these modern businesses not only look after all of their stakeholders but they particularly look after their staff. They usually pay them above-average salaries, spend a significant amount of time and money on their training and provide a wide range of employee benefits.

Although this increases their staff costs on one level, paradoxically it makes such companies far more profitable because their staff remain more loyal and become much more productive. As a result training costs reduce as they are not constantly having to replace and re-train staff and revenue increases significantly. Their profits then rise substantially compared to other businesses which do not invest in their staff.

It is clear that firms of endearment are the beginning of a new era of conscious capitalism, where companies that are responsible towards their stakeholders and trade sustainably will reap the greatest rewards. You can be sure that Minerva Money Management will invest in these firms of the future.  You know it makes sense.*
